It's easy to get around in San Miguel, even if you don't own a car. You can easily walk to a lot of places, and this is really the best way to get to know the town. I was pleasantly surprised by all of the little shops and cafés I found when I finally got out of my habit of driving everywhere.
However, there are times when you need more than your legs to get you where you’re going. Your transportation options are as follows:
The Bus
If you want to experience how locals of modest means travel, the bus is your ticket. At 8-10 pesos per person for anywhere in town, you really can’t beat the price. Plus, you’ll get a little exercise walking to and from the bus stop. The wait is usually 5-20 minutes.
Learn which buses take you where by checking the front of the bus and asking your neighbors or others waiting at the bus stop. You can ask the driver, too. They generally don’t speak English but can tell you if they’re headed to a certain location.
The downside? Loud music, old seats, odors and no “official” schedule that anyone actually pays attention to. But don’t forget - it’s cheap!
Taxis and Uber
Generally speaking, it’s safe to take one of those green and white taxis that you see all over town. Before you get in the car, though, you’ll want to ask the driver how much they’re going to charge to get you where you want to go. If it seems outrageous, simply say “no, gracias” and wait for another taxi to come along. The driver might then offer you a lower rate, which you are free to accept or reject.
If you’re especially concerned about safety, you can also check that
* the taxi number is printed in red on the back of the car
* their license is displayed on the dash, and the person in the photo is the person you’re talking to
For additional security, you can take photos of this information and share it with someone local.
If you want to schedule a trip in advance, or just call a taxi to come pick you up (vs. hailing one on the street) you can use one of these private taxi services that are considered both safe and reliable. Do note that it can cost double of what it’ll cost to just catch one passing by, but sometimes peace of mind is worth it.

Uber is pretty hit and miss in San Miguel. Some users have been happy with their service, while others complain that drivers often cancel or ask for more than the quoted price. However, if you’re a die hard fan, or just really want the tracking feature, the app does work here.
Shuttle Services
For trips to the airport to and from San Miguel, I (and many others) highly recommend Bajio Go. You can reach them at 415.185.8665, or from the US, 202.609.9905.
They will pick you up at whatever hour is necessary to ensure that you arrive at the airport on time. They will also pick you up from the airport, provided you have made prior arrangements. They travel to Queretaro, Leon (BJX) and Mexico City.
